Implants
A dental implant is a titanium post (like a tooth root) that is surgically positioned into the jawbone beneath the gum line. Once the implant has osseo-integrated (bound to the jaw bone) your dentist can secure a replacement crown or bridge in that area. An implant is fixed, and not removed after placement, and is often considered the best option to replace a missing tooth or teeth.

Crowns and Bridges
Crowns and bridges are fixed/ non-removeable prosthetic devices that are cemented onto existing teeth or implants by a dentist. Crowns are used most commonly to entirely cover or “cap” a damaged tooth or to cover an implant. Bridges are commonly used to cover a space if you’re missing one or more teeth. They are cemented to natural teeth or secured to implants surrounding the space where the tooth once stood.
In addition to strengthening a damaged tooth, bridges and crowns can be used to improve a tooth’s appearance, shape, alignment and dental occlusion (bite). Gaps left by missing teeth can cause the remaining teeth to shift, which can result in a bad bite. Bridges and crowns help prevent this from happening.

Veneers
Dental veneers are a cosmetic option that are made to cover the front of teeth, to achieve a natural, attractive look. They can be used to fix chipped, stained, misaligned, worn down, uneven or abnormally spaced teeth.
The two most common materials used in dental veneers are composite resin and porcelain. Your dentist can discuss the advantages/disadvantages of each option.

Dentures
Dentures are made to replace missing teeth. They are appliances that are removable ie can be taken out and put back into your mouth. While dentures take some getting used to and will never feel exactly the same as natural teeth, today’s dentures are natural looking and more comfortable than ever. There are acrylic, metal & flexible denture options available.
Replacing missing teeth can help to improve your function, appearance and smile.

Root Canal Treatment (RCT)
In simple terms, root canal treatment is used as a way to save a tooth that is labelled as ‘dead’. The alternative option is usually an extraction.
Root canal treatment, or endodontic treatment, is the procedure involving the removal of infected or dead pulp from your tooth root canal area (the area inside of the hard part of your tooth). There are often several appointments required to complete the different stages of a root canal treatment.
Once your root canal treatment is completed, the tooth is filled with a permanent filling or a crown.
If a “dead” (necrotic) or infected (abscessed) tooth is not treated and the situation worsens, the infection will become more severe, possibly leading to facial swelling and severe toothache.

Routine Dental Check-ups
Taking care of your teeth means more than brushing and flossing. For complete care, it’s important to visit a dentist every six months for a regular check-up and professional cleaning.
The first step in this process is to find a dentist with whom you feel comfortable.
Regular check-ups and professional cleaning will help you keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Extractions (including wisdom teeth)
If a tooth has been broken or damaged by decay, your dentist may try to fix it with a filling, crown or other dental treatment option. However, when there’s too much damage for the tooth to be repaired, the tooth may need to be extracted or removed.
Wisdom teeth or third molars, are often extracted if there is inadequate room for them to erupt properly. They commonly cause problems from the age of 16-17 years to mid 20’s. At other ages, they may need to be removed if they become decayed or infected.
SV DENTAL have very skilled dentists at performing dental extractions in the dental chair. However, if required, the dentist may refer you to a visiting specialist.

Occlusal Splints or Night Guards
Bruxism is also known as grinding or clenching of your teeth. It’s a very common condition, and can cause damage to your teeth, jaw pain, clicking or locking of the jaw. If your experience any of these symptoms you may be diagnosed with TMD (Temporo-Mandibular Disorder).
Our dentists are very skilled at diagnosing bruxism and TMD, and can offer treatment options to treat these conditions. Often a night guard or occlusal splint can be made to alleviate symptoms.
